Next Step For The Upgrade Of ODFAuthors

I’m currently working on the upgrade of the ODFAuthors website to the newest version of the Content Management System (CMS) Plone. I worked on the source code for the new environment during the last days. Today I created a new test buildout for the site on a virtual server. I run it with a copy of the current ODFAuthors website and updated it to the lastest version of Plone 4.3.x. This worked out smoothly. I’ll work on the change over from LinguaPlone to the new multilingual app during the next days. This is a step that had to be done before the upgrade to Plone 5.0.x could take place.

Site-Feed For The New LibreOffice Extensions And Templates Site

I added a site-feed to the new LibreOffice extensions and templates website today. You could get the list of new extensions and templates published on the site via rss-feed. The url for the feeds in the format Atom is e.g.: https://extensions.libreoffice.org/atom.xml

The site also provides links for feeds in the format RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and iTunes.

New Extensions And Templates Website On The Way

I worked with a Plone service provider on the setup of a new LibreOffice extensions and templates website and the migration of the content from the current site to the new site. We are currently short before we will move over to the new website. The new site will contain extensions and templates. We will not have to Plone sites for this purpose. Thus LibreOffice extension or/and template contributors will need only one account in the future. We migrated the user account from the current sites to the new one too. Thus all contributors will be able to login with their current credentials to the new website.

Offene Verwaltung und offene Formate

Das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen hat sich vor mehr als drei Jahren öffentlich auf den Weg zur offenen Verwaltung gemacht. Seitdem hat sich bereits einiges bewegt, wie auf dem OpenNRW-Kongress in dieser Woche im Landschaftspark Nord in Duisburg zu sehen und zu hören war. Auf der zentralen Plattform von OpenNRW, auf der auch offene Daten zur Verfügung gestellt werden, stellt man leider fest, dass weiterhin nicht alle Daten in einem offenen Datenformat zur Verfügung gestellt werden. So stellt beispielsweise das Ministerium für Arbeit, Integration und Soziales (MAIS) dort aktuell Daten zum Thema „Anteil abhängig Erwerbstätiger mit geringfügiger Beschäftigung“ in dem binären xls-Format bereit, wobei die Datei auch noch VBA-Makros enthält. Auch viele andere aktuelle Daten aus diesem Landesministerium werden in keinem offenen Datenformat angeboten. Damit werden leider unnötige Hürden für Bürger aufgebaut, die diese Daten nutzen, sich mit ihnen auseinandersetzen und an einer offenen Diskussion teilnehmen wollen. Gesteigert wird dies, wenn solche Dateien dann zusätzlich noch Makros oder ähnliches mit Funktionen enthalten.

Auf dem Weg zur offenen Verwaltung ist es erforderlich, dass für alle Bereiche darauf gedrungen wird, dass Daten nur in offenen Dateiformaten bereit gestellt werden, damit jeder Bürger, egal wie viel Geld er für seine technische Ausstattung zur Verfügung hat oder ausgeben möchte, an dem gewünschten öffentlichen Dialog informiert teilhaben kann. Dazu könnte die OpenNRW-Plattform selbst einen Beitrag leisten, indem dort Daten nur in offenen Dateiformaten entgegen genommen und bereit gestellt werden.

Freie Software und Nachhaltigkeit

Seit einigen Jahren besitze ich eine GPS-Uhr für das Lauftraining und Trecking. Diese Uhr kann mittels eines USB-Kabels ausgelesen werden. Hierfür wurde mit der Uhr eine Software mitgeliefert, die auf Windows XP usw. gestartet werden konnte. Unter der aktuellen Version von Windows ist die Software nicht mehr lauffähig.

Ich bin deshalb und weil ich es lästig fand, nur zum Auslesen der GPS-Uhr ein anderes Betriebssystem zu starten, auf die Suche nach einer passenden freien Software gegangen, die auch auf dem Betriebssystem Linux lauffähig ist. Nach kurzer Suche habe ich ein freies Software Projekt auf der Plattform github.com gefunden:

Dank der unter Linux verfügbaren freien Werkzeuge zum Kompilieren von Quellcode konnte ich ein lauffähiges Programm erstellen und auf meinem Linux-Rechner installieren. Nach dem Anschluss der GPS-Uhr an den USB-Port des Rechners konnte ich als Superuser („su“) mit dem Kommando „/usr/local/bin/crane_gps_watch_client“ auf die Daten der Uhr zugreifen und auf dem Rechner lokal ablegen. Mit der Option –split wurden die einzelnen GPS-Trainings-/Trecking-Tracks gesondert heruntergeladen und als einzelne Dateien abgespeichert.

Diese einzelnen Tracks konnte ich später in das Programm „MyTourBook“ einlesen und mir die einzelnen Trainings/Touren mit Ihren Daten und in einer Landkarte anzeigen lassen. Auch dieses Programm ist freie Software.

Dank freier Software gehört meine GPS-Uhr folglich nicht zum „alten Eisen“. Ich kann sie weiter wie bisher verwenden. Da die freien Software-Programme auch unter Linux lauffähig sind, brauche ich kein Windows-Betriebssystem mehr, um die Daten von der GPS-Uhr zu laden und zu verwalten. Freie Software hat damit für mich wieder einen Beitrag zur Nachhaltigkeit geleistet.

Plone Script Fun

The Plone content management system could run Python scripts from the command line. I worked already with such scripts in the past. I decided to work on a new script that reads the current users of the new LibreOffice extensions and templates website with some additional information (e.g. email-address, roles) and put this information into a csv-file.

Then I want a list of all user names line by line in a text file. The same I want for the contributors to the new website. This will help to regularly clean up the amount of accounts in the new website and delete not used accounts (the diff of both lists).

New Release For The New LibreOffice Templates Site

I worked on some more bits of the Plone 5 add-on for the new LibreOffice templates website. There were especially some localisation tags missing etc. I updated them and the corresponding localisation template file. The new release ships also with a first localisation into German. The source code is available at the repository of The Document Foundation at github (https://github.com/tdf/tdf.templateuploadcenter).
